К внутриклеточным кальцийсвязывающим белкам, наиболее распространенным в нервной системе, селективно экспрессирующимся в определенных популяциях нейронов, относятся кальбиндин (КБ) массой 28 кДа, кальретинин (КР) и парвальбумин (ПБ). Данные белки распространены не только в центральной нервной системе, но и в узлах автономной нервной системы. В симпатических узлах грызунов обнаруживаются КБ и ПБ, в метасимпатических интрамуральных – КБ и КР. Функции их в нервной системе до сих пор не выяснены, однако можно предположить, что они играют важную роль в регуляции уровня Са2+ в клетках. Кальцийсвязывающие белки участвуют также в процессах возрастного развития автономных нейронов. В раннем постнатальном онтогенезе происходит увеличение доли КБ- и КР-иммунопозитивных нейронов в интрамуральных узлах кишки (в противоположность возрастным изменениям содержания кальцийсвязывающих белков в симпатических узлах, где процент КБ-позитивных нейронов понижается). Функциональное значение таких сдвигов, вероятно, связано с ролью кальциевых токов в развитии нейронов и синаптической передачи.
