Introduction. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are molecules of small dimensions, consisting of about 30–40 amino acids, possessing of antiviral, antibacterial and fungicidal action. AMPs can be considered as a first barrier against pathogens in genital tract. The aim of the study. To investigate the relationship between AMPs and quantity of normal and opportunistic bacteria in the cervical mucus of the female reproductive tract on late terms of pregnancy. Methods. Bacteriological examination of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms was performed according to recommendations of B.A. Efimov et al. (2002). AMPs mRNA expression was determined with the use of quantitative PCR. For correlation analysis Spearman criterion was used. Results. The number of lactobacilli, Escherichia coli and staphylococci was found to have a positive correlation with amount of alpha- and betadefensins. The quantity of Gram-negative bacteria (corynebacteria and clostridia), on the contrary, decreases with an increase in mRNA expression of alpha-defensins. Conclusion. Thus, AMPs play an important role in the control of vaginal microbiocenosis and can be considered as future pharmaceutical agents.
