MAMMOSCINTIGRAPHY IN BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSIS

Introduction. Nuclear medicine imaging is widely used in oncology for the assessment of pathophysiologic changes occurring in a tumor. In this regard, the intensive study of diagnostic efficiency of the existing radiopharmaceuticals and the search for the new ones is continuing. Purpose. To compare efficiency of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with 99mТс-MIBI and 199Tl in the diagnosis of breast cancer. Materials and methods. Out of the 290 women included into the study, there were 220 patients with breast cancer (T1–4N0–1M0) and 70 with benign breast lesions. Two hundred patients underwent 99mТс-MIBI SPECT and 90 199Tl SPECT. Results. Sensitivity of both 99mТс-MIBI SPECT and199Tl SPECT in detection of breast cancer has been found to be high, being 94.4% and 95%, respectively. Sensitivity was lower in detection of small breast cancer (lesions less than 1 cm in diameter) and multicentrical character of tumor growth irrespective of the used radiopharmaceutical agent (75,8% and 75%; 59,2% and 57%). Sensitivity in detecting regional lymph node metastasis was higher with 99mТс-MIBI SPECT than with 199Tl SPECT (91.8% versus 73%). Conclusion. In view of high sensitivity and specificity, SPECT with 199Тl can be recommended to be additionally used when other imaging modalities and histological findings are inconclusive.
