The use of dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) as an agent for the induction of the experimental colitis is regarded as a valid method in experimental biology and medicine for the estimation of the effectiveness of pharmacological preparations for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) in humans. In the review, we tried to generalize the results of the investigations of the mechanism of thе damaging action of DSS in severe colitis in mice. The corpus of the data published to the present days is enough for the understanding of the main steps of the inflammation progressing in the gut of the mice. The better understanding will allow developing the target drugs for the treating the IBD in humans.
